Parade!

I’ve always wanted to go to a really big parade, like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade or the Rose Parade, but I’ve never had the chance. Growing up in Louisville I went down to the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Pegasus Parade every year I could. But I had never been to a small-town parade until P and I moved to his folks’ farm near Lewisburg, West Virginia. Every Jan. 1, the town holds a parade called the Shanghai Parade. It’s a very homemade kind of parade, with people in fabulous and often funny costumes, local pols, dance groups, floats and fire trucks.

The small towns here in Southern Illinois are big on festivals and parades. One of my favorites is Murphysboro’s Apple Festival, held every September. I love the way they use the same sign every year, just painting out the previous year’s date!

  1. That looks like fun. I love this kind of stuff!

  2. Me, too, Becky. Though now Bengal wants to be a Boy Scout and we’re going to have to deal with the marching in the parade part!

  3. I love parades. The one you’ve depicted here looks like Americana at its best. Perhaps the best kind.
