Saturday Serendipity, 6 May 2017

It’s the first Saturday in May. You know what that means: the running of the Kentucky Derby 🐎 in Louisville, KY, my other hometown. Here’s a little history of the race, along with the WWD fashion and hats photos from 2016. Trivia: When I was growing up in Louisville, you could start wearing white shoes after Derby Day, rather than Memorial Day.

The body of notorious World’s Fair Killer, H.H. Holmes, is being exhumed to see if he’s really in his grave. Longtime rumors say Holmes arranged to escape. These exhumation stories capture our attention from time to time, but they’re usually just media stunts.

Swearing makes you stronger? Um, okay.

ALL the lemon cake recipes from my go-to recipe site, Southern Living. I used to have dozens of their annual recipe books, but I finally pared down to a few favorites. Love that most are online now. Lemon is my warm weather favorite, though I confess that Lemon Meringue pie is my preference over any cake.

Books, film, writing, etc.

Can’t wait for this adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Here are some photos. But, oh, Kenneth, what’s up with that horrifying mustache? It looks like a something the cat hocked up!

The legendary Jane Friedman wrote a piece about Tall Poppy writers and author collectives. Look for an interview with Tall Poppy Amy Reichert, here on the blog in the next couple weeks.

Gizmodo’s Alex Cranz brings up an excellent point about the absence of butter in the screen adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Edgar-winning novelist and delightfully genuine human, Meg Gardiner, on her new thriller, UNSUB.

There’s always lots of online goodness and advice at Ann Bogel’s Modern Mrs. Darcy site. Check out the deets on free audiobook downloads from Overdrive.

I was never a big Dark Tower fan, but the film has Idris Elba in it, so you bet I’ll see it. Here’s the new trailer.

Amazing; filled with wonderful goodies, Laura! I ADORE Lemon cake and the recipes and pictures look scrumptious! I checked out UNSUB ( looks darned good, too); I was raised on the Kentucky Derby, and I placed a bet yesterday ( won something—long distant) , but I knew many trainers and owners from the past, and horse racing is a brutal competition ( think Grey Hound Dogs). I used to belong to a riding academy when I was younger (I live in a section of NJ where there are many horse farms). Grace Kelly’s sister was very involved with horse racing. I recall the original Murder on the Orient Express with Albert Finney 🙂 and your blog is sensational; I think it’s because you really care about your readers and friends.

You placed a bet and won? You are the coolest. 😎

I can’t bear greyhound racing–I’ve seen so many lovely greyhounds who were rescued after they were injured or retired. They’re so fragile. Heartbreaking.

Husband and I brought an enormous piece of lemon cake home for our son Friday night. But there’s half of it left in the fridge. So tempting.
